about

I road a bicycle once from Calgary Alberta to Northern California. I was with a fried named Stan and when we got to Vancouver we had run out of money. So we went to the welfare lady to get helped out.
She was nice enough and told us we had to stay in The Single Man's Catholic Womens' Hostel for 3 days to qualify for a check and we both readily agreed to. Well, somethings just aren’t worth the money. I met a guy there that said he used to play pro football but because of the head injuries was now living in the hostel. He told me a ton of tales and broke my heart. This song is for him.

lyrics

Working Hard Working Nowhere Blues

Empty eyes in vacant faces echo what the years can do
Years of hard work or no work at all
Living in some run down charity hall
And you started out so young and strong
Willing to bump heads and take ‘em all on
Confident that even with some battles lost you’d never loose

You got those working hard looking for work
Working nowhere blues
Running around this said old town
Worn the pavement right through my shoes
Well the land lady says that she wants the rent
But I’m feeling kinda funny cause the rents all spent
I got those working hard , looking for work
Working nowhere blues

Well ya rise up in the morning
Turn your bedding in
Funny how your security diminishes with it
Grab a free towel
and scrub yourself down
Put on your cleanest dirties and head down town

And ya shake a lot of cold hands
and give em all your name
But no matter how you fill out all the forms
The answers always the same

You got those working hard looking for work
Working nowhere blues
Running around this said old town
Worn the pavement right through my shoes
Well my baby cries cause she wants to go out
but the way the momma bug me make me scream and shout
I got those working hard, looking for rent
Working nowhere blues

Well I finially land a job from an interview
That I don't even remember that I had
Done a couple weeks, maybe four
The layoff comes I'm first out the door

I got those working hard looking for work
Working nowhere blues
(Instramental)
Well the banker say they gonna tow my car away
But I sold my car just the other day
I got those
working hard looking for work
Working nowhere blues (to end)

"Why do I do this?” In the simplest terms it’s "I write, therefore I am." Corny, sure, but I actually hear myself thinking in song. Everything from the mundane to the serious... in my minds "ear" I hear melody lines and music when I am pondering .
Does that make me nuts? Maybe. Some of the songs that play in my head I am driven to share, to experience them with others. I am a song writer.
