about

The Wizard is one of my favourite songs to perform. I think mostly because of the fond memories of how and why it was written.
I had never been to Victoria BC before and My buddy Don brought me to see it and visit with some music friends he had here at the time. One evening he took me out to the break-wall and commenced to roll one of the most exquisite joints of all time. I don't know to this day what all was in it, maybe just pot but sitting there with the storm waves breaking and the moon shine hitting the spray I swear I say the whole thing happen. The wizard (wearing a hooded cloak with a rope for a belt and a wooden staff) standing and shouting into the wind and a demon standing in front of him answering his call (the demon looking small and stump like with burning coals for eyes) neither one looked happy and a song was born. I wrote some then and there and the rest within a day or two, played if for Don and he gave me a hug and said “It will never sell, but nice song anyway.”

lyrics

The Wizard
It was just after dark 50 years ago when the Wizard went for a walk. Down to the shore where the waves did roar, a spirit to conger up. He uttered some strange incantations, then stood as if waiting reply. His hands to the sky, his arms spread wide. A fire was in his eye.

Then a spirit stood there beside him and demanded why do you call! The Wizard smiled and said “I'm lonely, me my power and that's all. You see it's been nigh on 10,000 years I've studied these thing I know and I've not know a warm touch just the occasional lost soul.

And the spirit smiles said “Yes it's been a while sense you've been whole. And you summoned me asking for relief, a soothing for your soul. But you foolish man you had it in your had and you let it go And you come to me asking for release, freedom, freedom for your soul HA!

(instrumental)

Now 30 years has come and gone sense the Wizard went for his walk. Magics gone and died but the spirits they still mock... “OH you foolish man you had it in your had and you let it go. And you come to me asking for release, freedom, freedom for your soul

about

Jim Moffatt Victoria, British Columbia

"Why do I do this?” In the simplest terms it’s "I write, therefore I am." Corny, sure, but I actually hear myself thinking in song. Everything from the mundane to the serious... in my minds "ear" I hear melody lines and music when I am pondering .
Does that make me nuts? Maybe. Some of the songs that play in my head I am driven to share, to experience them with others. I am a song writer.
